The Athletic Association was formed in 1873 by a small group of students. The University Athletic Association was founded in 1882 at the invitation of Provost William Pepper. The Association dedicated themselves to preparing a playing field for competition. In May of 1883 the Board of Trustees established a Department of Physical Culture.
